About Carolyn Swayze

"I established the agency in 1994, when W. P. Kinsella persuaded me to leave my law practice and to sign him as my first client. My background included a previous life as a freelance writer, (humour, business, literary fiction), a novelist (a genre mystery published in 1977 in the US and a literary novel, publication of which was aborted when the Canadian publisher declared bankruptcy in 1984), and a rather scholarly biography, published in 1987.

Since 1994 the agency has had the pleasure of assisting emerging and established authors realize their publication dreams. Their ages have ranged from 22 to 84 years.

The books we have guided to publication include literary and commercial fiction, creative non-fiction, Canadian history, memoirs, humour and cookbooks, as well as a few books for younger readers.

See our submissions page for information on what we like to see from prospective authors.

Barry Jones has been an associate agent since the agency's inception. He is an avid reader of non-fiction with a particular interest in military histories.

Kris Rothstein, our Associate Agent, is also a writer and editor. She is on the Editorial Board of Geist Magazine and a contributor to Herizons, Canadian Children's Book News, CM and Broken Pencil. Kris has an interest in literary fiction, history, narrative non-fiction and young adult fiction. She is the proprietor of Smart Cookie Publishing, a micro-press."

From a master of family dynamics comes this vivid tale of two misfits who find each other while stumbling toward their own true identities. In 1958, eight-year-old Danny Lim has been sent to buy cigarettes for his father, when he realizes that he has lost the money. Frantic, he rushes through Vancouver's Chinatown and behind a nightclub, where he sees Miss Val, a long-time burlesque dancer. Danny is enraptured with her sequined garters and silk robe, and Val, touched by his fascination, gives him a pack of cigarettes and her silk belt.

In the lonely years following the death of her fiancé, Helen is unable to move on with her life. But life itself is moving on around her — literally: the building of a dam is forcing her small town — and her family home — to relocate.
